2022 GMC Hummer EV Truck Review

Intro

How much anticipation awaits the arrival of the new Hummer electric vehicle pickup truck? All one needs to know is once it became available to purchase last October, it sold out in a mere 10 minutes! Three more configurations set to release in the coming years are still available for reservations.

This modern-day marvel of a truck is known as the HUMMER EV. Edition 1 will be available in the Fall of 2021 and sells for just under $113,000 – so from the get-go it will be billed as the most expensive truck in history. Less pricey (but still pricey) configurations are expected to be available in the next few years. An SUV version of the Hummer truck is expected to arrive in 2023.

Despite pulling the plug on its last gas-guzzling Hummer in 2010, General Motors decided to give its star-studded EV truck the name that is not easily forgotten. HUMMER is emblazoned across the front of the vehicle, a move that instantly gives it name recognition. It seems a bit ironic the “new” Hummer is the antitheses of a gas-guzzler.

Charging and Range

The 2022 Hummer EV 3X is expected to go a long way before requiring a charge – an estimated 350 miles. And using either a 400-volt or 800-volt DC fast charger, the Hummer EV can add 100 miles of range in 10 minutes. The exact full-charge time remains unknown. The later Hummer EV configurations are no slouch in rage, starting at an estimated 250 miles.

Exterior Style

What most people will find most unique regarding the Edition 1 exterior style is what GM calls its Infinity roof. Its four individual panels weigh 25 pounds each and are all removable, giving way to a convertible-like look. The panels can be stored in the front trunk (funk) in vinyl storage bags. The truck’s power-operated rear window also drops down, bringing even more fresh air into the cabin.

Power and Speed

The Hummer EV has standard four-wheel drive and will be equipped with enormous performance. It has three electric motors, two that provide power to the rear axle, and a third one that’s located in the front. The Edition 1 has a whopping 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque. It’s Tesla-like quick, reportedly capable of going 0-60 mph in roughly 3.0 seconds. Still unknown is the truck’s towing and payload capability.

Performance

The Hummer EV’s massive amount of power can be put to work in off-road adventures. Standard 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler tires offer considerable strength and flexibility, another major plus for off-road maneuverability with the Hummer EV. General Motors says their all-new electric Hummer is capable of climbing 60-percent grades (forward and reverse), fording water more than two-feet deep, and scaling 18-inch verticals.

The Hummer EV Edition 1 has 15.9 inches of ground clearance and the adaptive air suspension system can raise the truck an additional six inches. The off-road kit includes rock rails, four-wheel steering, underbody plating to protect the battery pack, an extensive camera system that acts as a virtual spotter, and diagonal-steer “crab” mode.

The Hummer EV truck is equipped with a regenerative braking system and the driver can use the paddle-wheel shifters to increase the braking force, a cool feature when navigating along some rugged trails. Four of the Hummer EV’s 18 cameras are located underneath and positioned to avoid getting damaged while traveling along challenging terrain. There’s also a wash function that will keep the cameras clear of dirt and mud.

Interior Space

The first thing people may notice about the Hummer EV interior are the floors have a topographical map of the moon’s surface – the Sea of Tranquility is the lunar crater where millions of TV viewers famously watched astronaut Neil Armstrong become the first human to set foot on the moon.

The Hummer EV has faux leather-covered seats and steering wheel, a big 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster screen, and an even larger 13.4-inch infotainment display touchscreen. The screens are especially useful in displaying some informative graphics in off-road endeavors. They include tire pressure, roll angle, torque vectoring, chassis ride height, wheel travel, and more. The Edition 1 also has a six-way tailgate.

Conclusion

The arrival of the 2022 Hummer EV truck will not go unnoticed. It’s quite the unique truck that’s equipped with extraordinary performance, terrific off-road capability, and a unique roof that can be stored in the front trunk to give the vehicle a convertible appearance. It is exciting to see more electric trucks available on the market.
